The Mind Boggles

.
As seen in this week's Montreal Mirror:

FRESH HOT HATE

While the passing into law of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act was generally met with a blend of applause and standard American indifference, four Michigan zealots are concerned the prevention of anti-gay crime interferes with their God-given right to violently hate gays. So outraged are they by the inconvenience, in fact, that they’ve filed a federal suit.

Filed by Dominos Pizza founder Tom Monaghan’s Thomas More Law Center on behalf of the American Family Association and three equally wing-nutty pastors, the suit alleges the Hate Crimes Act gives homosexuals legal protections that make them “more equal than others.” Furthermore, the plaintiffs are concerned that the laws equate their “deeply held religious beliefs” with racism and will stymie their “freedom of speech, expressive association and free exercise” of those beliefs. The act itself clearly states that it in no way will infringe on freedom of speech or freedom of expression laws.

In addition to getting its allegations wrong, the suit also dismisses the notion that Matthew Shepard’s having been tied to a fence and beaten to death in 1998 had anything to do with his homosexuality.

Monaghan is described in Wikipedia as a philanthropist.  My dictionary describes philanthropy as an "altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement".  Yeah, as long as it's anti gay, anti choice   (Monaghan is big in HLI).

How can you justify hate in the name of a god? HOW!?! Isn't catholicism, well christianity overall supposed to be about love and tolerance and all that hippie stuff? The religious right makes me sick.

Happy v-day everyone.

I'll never ever eat Domino's pizzas again. As far as I know he does not own the company anymore, but it's for the principle. Monaghan's a dangerous religious wacko.

Actually, he sold Domino's in 1998. Mr. Jazz and I had been boycotting Domino's since way before that, and there are ever so much better choices out there anyway, aren't there?

I am always intrigued by the thought process that claims something is more equal. Either it is equal or it is not.
As for the dingbats I think the truly sad part of all this is that in the 21 century there is any need for laws to tell people that discrimination is wrong.

These religious bigots should really read something besides revelations some time.

On the other hand they profess to love a single Jew who always hung around with a bunch of guys. I wonder if any of them have heard of compensation.

This is my second attempt at leaving a comment. Apparently, Blogger magically disappeared the first.

I was aware of Mr. Monaghan's anti-choice, right wing ideals over twenty years ago when I and many others marched in Washington for the preservation of Roe Vs. Wade.

As a Jewish woman with a disability, I know first-hand that despite laws such as the ADA, ignorance and stupidity reign supreme. Though the ADA is a deeply flawed piece of legislation, and what is needed is a constitutional amendment guaranteeing my full inclusion, I shake my head in utter amazement that I am a member of a protected class that makes me more equal than others in the eyes of people like Monaghan and Eastwood.

Would things be better if these things were abolished? I very much doubt it as the situations that created them in all of their flawed glory remain. The same can be said for anti-hate crime legislation discussed in this posting. We need it precisely because of right wing crazies.

Check out http://www.makethemgoaway.com for some provacative reading.

Rant over...

Happy Valentine's Day!

Holy hell. I knew about the crazies, but hadn't heard of their opposition to hate crime legislation. But it stands to reason - they are just the sort of people who commit hate crimes - of course they don't want them to be illegal! This sort of thing just twists my gut.

Funny that the Domino's guy would use the bible to be anti-gay. The passage about homosexuality is in Leviticus and that is also that book of the bible that prohibits eating pork. There is ham and sausage on the Domino's menu and I bet it was there before he sold it. It's so very tiresome how folks pick out the parts they want to use and ignore the rest. The good part is, that if there is a hell, these haters will burn in it.

Superstitious minds, cold hearts. Ever notice how dirty-minded homophobes and religious fanatics are? And not in a good way. ,-)

Dave - hey profess to love a single Jew who always hung around with a bunch of guys. Oh Dude, that is priceless. I choked on my tea.

E - You said it best. Thank you.

SAW - Justifying hate in the name of god. I know I sound like an idiot, but logically it just doesn't make any sort of sense. Yeah, I know, I'm too prosaic to become a religious nut, eh?

Gaelyn - BS indded.

Rachel - There is much better pizza around. Usually made by the little independent guy around the corner. Maybe one of them even makes gluten free pizza!

Geewits - Only you would think of that. The pork never even crossed my mind. Not that I know my bible all that well.

Jeaux - yeah, they scream, they yell, they thump their bibles and then they get caught with a mistress or a boy. Hypocrites.

The vileness carried out in the name of God all around the world is hideous. Just one of the reasons I cannot subscribe to any organized faith. Organized religion is purely political and has very little connection to genuine spiritual faith.

I'm still way back at trying for the life of me to figure out why the fact that some people are gay makes other people so insanely insane? How in hell does their being gay impact anyone else's life in any negative way? There are so many people doing really horrible things out there that should probably be concerning those who claim to be looking out for the best interests of society. (PS: Happy Birthday Jazz)

Ian - how true

XUP - Sorry, that was a FB fuckup. And they put the year as 1901. I've fixed it, the birthday is actually in June.

Some people think they can get away with anything if they call it religion. Sometimes they're right. I hope that doesn't prove true in this instance.

To me, they are self-righteous, insensitive, despicable bigots.
Great post - sometimes these things just HAVE to be said.
