In the Immortal Words of Supertramp...

.

It's raining again...

I woke this morning to the sound of a torrential downpour and just laid there, listening, waiting for the sound to lull me back to sleep.

Surprisingly, sick as I am of the rain this summer, it's still one of my favourite sounds. Evah. I even have a CD of rain sounds. It's a love hate relationship we have, the rain and I.

As a child I loved rainy Fridays with a passion. Why Friday, I have no idea, but a rainy Friday was the perfect Friday.

Walking to school in Wellies and a yellow raincoat, jumping in the puddles, the sound of it falling on my rubber hat, the knowledge I'd be spending recess indoors, devouring whatever book I was loving that day - it made my heart sing. The rain is supposed to be melancholy, but for me, it racked up the anticipation regarding the coming weekend, it seemed so full of promise. I know, it's completely nonsensical, but then I've never been one to follow the rules of logic and reason all that closely. Hell, I'm the person who backs up towards a three foot drop when I'm sweeping - that should tell you all you need to know.

This love of Friday rain persisted into high school, and then, eventually, it petered out. Too bad really, it'd be nice if rain could still make me really happy - I'd have been delirious with joy this summer.

Please note: some seem to think that top picture is mine. I wish. I got it off the internet. Mea Culpa.

Yet another thing we have in common. I love rain too. Something meditative and peaceful about it, especially the soft summer rains that bring the scent of wet grass and fresh mud.

I think the problem we've had this year (and I too have been unhappy with the wet summer) is that this time, the rain is accompanied by near-constant grey skies. The sun has been laregly absent this whole season. I need sun as much as I need rain.

Well you may not be deliriously happy, but you sure have retained your wry sense of humour!

I love the rain too. It's like a signal to curl up with a good book.

Have a good weekend Jazz.

You created a beautiful image of rainy Fridays.

Although I respect the gift of rain it's depended on where I've lived how much I liked it. Here in the desert, superb. Plus I love the thunder and lightning that accompanies.

Excellent capture of the downpour.
Be happy in the rain little girl.

I love a good rain storm. Notr] necessarily like the tornado we had last night, though.

Mostly for me, living in a highrise, what I miss most is the sound of rain on the leaves and hitting the earth. Hearing it pounding on cement and metal is just not the same. The best part of rain, is of course, the sunshine and fresh air afterwards

Jazz, I think you were meant to live out here on the Wet Coast. Come out west, we'll do lunch every rainy Friday (that would be a LOT of lunches!).

It's funny about rain. I love the smell of rain on the scorching hot Texas pavement. It's a smell you only get in the first 5 or 10 minutes and then it's washed away. When it pours rain, for some reason I always want to curl up on the couch and watch old black and white movies. I have no idea why.

It's one of my favorite sounds, too, even with all the flooding. So peaceful.

I just hate gloating, and you know that, right? But I would just love to see a righteous downpouring of rain. Rarely the case here, but this summer it is. Oh, and if you looked at all like the little facsimile in yellow wellies and raincoat then you were adorable, which I suspect you were.

I love the rain. It's a license to laze.

I love the rain also, but only if I'm in a position to enjoy it. Clint just finished building the front porch, with a deep overhang. We sat under it in a torrential storm the other day and didn't feel a drop. I just close my eyes and listen.

I like the sound of rain as I'm falling asleep. Not so much when I'm waking up if I have to go somewhere.

Rachel - Yes!!!! I need some sun!

Gaelyn - This summer I'm not liking it much. It seems non-stop this year.

Viotletsky - I love the smell of rain on a hot summer day.

Geewits - Rain and black and white movies just go together.

SAW - Yeah, the flooding can make it a bit less peaceful.

Pinklea - I feel like this summer we ARE living on the Wet Coast! Rain every Friday would get old real fast.

Ian - you hate gloating. Yeah right. How come no one asked me when they decided to switch our summers?

Bonnie - thanks for the award. I'll go pick it up.

Jeaux - A license to laze. I love that phrase.

Gnightgirl - Rain on a covered porch. Heaven!!!

XUP - Yeah, that can be a bummer, can't it?

I, too, like rainy days (except when they rain out a ballgame, of course.) Have you ever been to Mark Twain's house in Connecticut? He had one room of this mansion built with a tin roof specifically so he could go in there and enjoy the sound of the rain hitting it :-)

Nice photo!

Our first house had skylights, which magnified the sound of the rain to insane levels. That kind-of got the love of rainfall out of me. But I do like a nice thunderstorm.

Kill the logic and surrender to the associations......they're so much more powerful anyway!

I loved rainy anything when I was a kid. Course, now I'm a grown-up and my brain is fully grown...
