1 rant + 1 quote = Monday

Overheard:

"Well, I know I paid way too much for these shoes, but I deserve it"

Rant:

Why? Why does she deserve it? That "I deserve it" phrase drives me insane. Usually used when people have been good little consumers and bought themselves another toy.

What is this sense of entitlement we have? We're not entitled to anything.

You don't deserve the shoes. You wanted the shoes, you could (or couldn't) afford the shoes, you bought the shoes. I want leading directly to I bought. It has nothing to do with deserving something and everything to do with instant gratification.

Of course, it looks so much less shallow if you "deserve" it. Enough with the hypocrisy.

Quote:

I don't own a cell phone or a pager. I just hang around everyone I know, all the time. If someone wants to get a hold of me, they just say 'Mitch,' and I say 'what?' and turn my head slightly.
Mitch Hedberg

A man after my own heart.

I agree with you, people get into this entitlement B.S. and think the world owes them everything their little heart desires.

I am too cheap to spend more than 20 bucks on shoes :)

I bet the only time you turn when someone says "Mitch" is because you misheard them.

Should I have put a :) after my comment, or is the :) unnecessary?

Because I never meant to imply that you are a "Mitch," just that, you know, some people are overly sensitive about name calling and jump at the occasion to be offended, even when they shouldn't.

Not that you're one of those sorts of people either.

Hey as your big brother I feel I'm entitled to anything my little heart desires. After all having you as a little sister must entitle me to something, karma wise!!! ;o)

I do own a cell phone but I haven't turned it on in almost three years. ;)

Awwww. I always get sad when I think of Mitch Hedberg. "I don't know what you have over there, but over here there is nothing." As far as the deserve thing goes, I'll play Devil's Advocate. What about if you have been doing intensive home remodeling for a while involving lots of physical labor and power tools and treated yourself to a massage. Would you not deserve that?

Myutopia - If I lived in your neck of the woods, I'd buy cheap shoes too... Unfortunately Montreal winters call for ridiculously expensive boots.

Ticknart - LMAO here

BB - Shaddap! (I feel like I repeat that to you often here) :-p

Steve - I bow down to you...

Geewits - OK, I grant you that exceptions do apply. But not for overly expensive shoes and makeup.
